Marko Germar: Dancer and Choreographer
Originally from the South Pacific island of Guam of Filipino ancestry, Marko Germar moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to pursue a career in dance. In addition to nine years of studio training, he is now able to learn from a variety of choreographers as part of the So You Think You Can Dance family and live his dream.
He is currently in the top 8 of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance Season 8.
1. Do you have a nickname?
My family calls me Kimboy.
2. Do you have a job?
I work at Disneyland as a dancer for the show “Aladdin” The Musical Spectacular. I have been working there for about a year and seven months.
3. Are you in school?
No, I’m currently not in school, but I did attend the University of Guam for one year.
4. Do you have any formal dance training?
I had nine years of training in a dance studio in Guam called DANZJAZZ starting at the age of 10. I trained in different styles such as Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Hip-Hop, Ballroom and Gymnastics. I did not train in all of those styles for nine consecutive years due to the lack of instructors on the island and the lack of money to pay for classes, but my dance teacher C’zer Medina was always very helpful and generous to offer me a work study program wherein I cleaned and worked the desk for classes.
5. At what age did you first start to dance?
I started my formal training at the age of 10, but before training in a studio, I was a street Hip-Hop dancer where I learned most of my tricks on concrete starting at the age of 7.
6. What other training/talents do you have?
I am trained in tumbling and gymnastics. Technically, I’ve only had one year of training in an actual gymnastics gym.
7. What would people be most surprised to learn about you?
What people would be most surprised to learn about me is that I didn’t have a strong training in dance. The nine years that I trained in a studio not consecutive and broken into pieces. I grew up being a mimicker full of passion and lived off of YouTube since Guam is so far and flying to the U.S. was very expensive.
8. What choreographer do you look forward to working with?
I look forward to working with Travis Wall and/or Mia Michaels because their movement is so organically expressive and full of honesty and truth. The type of movement that will teach you more about yourself than anything else.
9. Which dancer from another season would be your dream dance partner?
My dream dance partner would be either Kathryn McCormick or Allison Holker because they are both such strong dancers with such strong expressive presence. It would be an absolute honor to share the SYTYCD stage with them and tell a story.
10. Which dancer from another season were you the most inspired by?
The dancers that most inspired me from another season would be Blake McGrath and Travis Wall because when they dance, nobody else matters. Not only are they strong dancers, but also strong story tellers with honest movement. They know how to put themselves in any position or situation that a choreographer asks for and do it beautifully without forcing anything.
