Sining Para sa Bayan
The event, sponsored by various Filipino American media groups, was held last Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at Noypitz Bar & Restaurant. The art auction, started at 4 pm, and was followed by a concert at 7 pm.
The event featured artists, musicians, writers, poets and photographers, including celebrity hosts Bernardo Bernardo, Jannelle So (co-hosts), Filipino folk rock pioneer Florante, Miguel Vera, Tateng Katindig, Ner de Leon, Malou Toler, Mon Concepcion, and Vicoy Bagongsigaw.
Members of the media performed at the event includes Balita Executive Editor Rhony Laigo and Asian Journal’s Andy Tecson, who is also the founder of the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra. The show was directed by columnist Lou Sabas.
Also participating were artists Jess Espanola (the first Filipino to win an Emmy), Vics Magsaysay, Rafael Maniago, Mat Relox, Rodolfo Samonte, Bienvenido “Boi” Sibug, and Juan “Magoo” Valencia.
Proceeds went go to the NUJP’s fund for media workers who were among the victims of typhoon Sendong. Two journalists, Leonisid Alsonado and Angelino Kundiman of radio station DXIC/Radio Mindanao Network perished; while many others lost their homes and belongings when the calamity struck Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, Dumaguete, and many other provinces in the area.
