THE Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) will bestow the title of Mr. Football to Azkals Phil Younghusband and Emilio Caligdong during its Annual Awards Night on March 3 at the Manila Hotel.
The 24-year-old Younghusband and the 29-year-old Caligdong are the first to receive the title after a long time. The honor was previously given to former football greats among them Ed Ocampo, Eddie Pacheco, Bert Honasan and Vic Sison.
“The PSA is pleased to name Phil Younghusband and Chieffy Caligdong as recipients of its Mr. Football award,” said Rey Bancod of Tempo, president of the oldest media organization in the Philippines established in 1949.
Both Younghusband, a former striker from Ashford Middlesex, England and Caligdong, a native of Pototan, Iloilo, joined the national team in 2004.
Both were virtually unknown until six years later when the Azkals pulled off a stunning win over Vietnam on the way to a semifinal stint in the ASEAN Suzuki Cup.
They led the Azkals in its entry to the main tournament of the AFC Challenge Cup. The team reached the second round of the World Cup qualifier.
