Relief efforts for victims of earthquake in visayas
Los Angeles, 15 February 2012 – The latest information gathered today, 15 February 2012, from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (NDRRMC) on the earthquake which hit Negros Oriental on 6 February 2012 are as follows:
Casualties: 42 dead, 54 injured and 66 missing. Search-and-rescue operations continue.
The earthquake affected a total of 46,303 families or 231,945 persons. There are currently 21 evacuation centers. PHIVOLCS advised residents whose houses were not damaged by the earthquake, to return to their homes.
A total of three (3) bridges in Negros Oriental (La Libertad-1, Jimalalud-1 and Guihulngan-1) remain impassable due to structural damage. One (1) road section along the Dumaguete North Road remains closed to vehicular traffic.
The estimated total cost of damages incurred by both passable and impassable roads and bridges, public buildings, and flood control structures was pegged at PhP 365,359,000.00.
Cellular services (Smart and Globe) are back to normal in the quake-affected area.
The city of Guihulngan remain without electricity and water. Electric power to portions of La Libertad and Jimalalud was restored on 9 February 2012.
According to NDRRMC, the Philippine government provided PhP 16,731,440.26 worth of relief assistance in the form of food and non-food items, medicines and financial assistance.
