25 Things That Are More Fun In The Philippines

Department of Tourism announces new campaign to attract visitors to the Philippines

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is launching a new brand campaign to attract visitors to the country with the line – ‘It’s more fun in the Philippines.’

Focusing on the country’s core strength, the campaign singles out what no other destination can offer – and that is the Filipino people.

For example, the Lonely Planet guidebook calls Filipinos ‘among the most easygoing and ebullient people anywhere.’ “Our strategy is simple: while other countries invite you to observe, Filipinos can promise a more heartfelt and interesting experience. Wherever you go, whatever you do in the country, it’s the Filipinos that will complete your vacation and will make your holiday unforgettable,” says the new Tourism Secretary, Ramon Jimenez, Jr.

Pleasure Palate: Six Taste Bizarre Food Challenge
Blog By Abby Abanes

When I think of what constitutes as a “bizarre food”, it’s not so much that I think particular foods are inherently bizarre by definition. It’s more like there are foods out there that I can’t fathom myself wanting to eat. Wanting to expand my culinary horizon, I decided to take on the Six Taste Bizarre Food Challenge. Six Taste is a Los Angeles food tour company and you can read about a couple of other tours I’ve been on with them here and here. As for their Bizarre Food Challenge, it’s a tour that you have to set up with them as a private tour. It takes place in the city of San Gabriel and the focus is on “bizarre” Chinese delicacies.

Our first bizarre bite of the day was from a Century Egg. The sheer blackness of the egg looked a bit daunting in the bright morning light, but it was a pretty background surrounding the striations of the yolk, which looked like agate. Century Eggs are duck, chicken or quail eggs that are preserved in a mixture of clay, ash, quicklime, salt and rice hulls for several weeks to several months. They can be eaten on their own, but are usually eaten with something else like chilled tofu or mixed in a rice congee.

SkipToMalou: Monay ( Filipino Rolls)
Blog By Malou Nievera

I’m in a baking mode… baking breads that is. You see, while two of my kids are still home for their winter break, baking bread in the morning is a sure way of waking them up. And we all know how college kids are with their sleeping schedule, or lack there of. This is a good mom-strategy sans nagging LOL!

You’ll love the bread that I’m going to share with you. It’s called monay, another local bakery staple back home. A few posts ago, I shared with you pan de sal. I collected a lot of memories eating pan de sal as I was growing up, but I couldn’t immediately identify a monay story because I don’t remember eating much of it as a kid. Oh boy, did I miss out…

This monay story began a few days ago during a New Year’s eve party at my sister’s house in Orlando. My sister and brother-in-law usually host New Year’s eve parties, where around fifteen families gather to wait until the clock strikes midnight.

As the night progressed, the topic of conversation was, of course food, but more specifically the monay. Everyone raved about the monay of Raffy, one of their friends. “Oh you have to try his bread, you’ll love it!” the guests would say to me.
